“Of course we can” was a familiar phrase often heard from the late Mr. Alexander (Sandy) J. Mitchell, MBE, founder of WindReach. Born with cerebral palsy, Sandy refused to let what others might see as a disability define or limit him. His optimism, determination, and achievements continue to inspire all who knew him.

A successful businessman and avid outdoorsman, Sandy participated in sailing, cross-country skiing, and horseback riding, among other sports. In 2008, he proudly represented Bermuda as an equestrian at the Beijing Paralympic Games, earning admiration from athletes around the world. Throughout his life, Sandy was deeply committed to creating inclusive community spaces that provided individuals of all abilities with access to meaningful and therapeutic activities.

Sandy Mitchell embodied the belief that the care and determination of one person can transform the lives of many.

In 1979, Sandy acquired land in Ontario, Canada, and developed WindReach Farm, a fully accessible, working farm that officially opened in 1989. Building on its success, WindReach Bermuda opened its doors on October 1, 1999, continuing Sandy’s legacy of inclusion and empowerment.

Today, WindReach Bermuda spans close to ten acres in Warwick Parish and features a Multi-Purpose Activity Centre, Animal Zone, Therapeutic Riding Centre, and fully accessible playground. What makes WindReach truly unique is its diverse range of therapeutic and educational programmes designed for people of all ages and abilities, from preschoolers to older adults. Each week, approximately 200 participants and visitors benefit from our inclusive space and programmes, carrying forward Sandy’s vision of a community where everyone can say, “Of course we can.”
